Crisis Prevention Specialist

Full Time | Every Other Weekend | 2 - 10:30 pm

Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio is currently seeking a Crisis Prevention Specialist for Faith Mission in Columbus, Ohio. Faith Mission is one of the largest homeless shelters in Columbus, Ohio, providing meals and shelter to men, women and Veterans with dignity and compassion.

Requirements for a Crisis Prevention Specialist with Lutheran Social Services:

  • Four-year degree in Social Work or related field or high school diploma with previous experience (lived or professional).
  • Previous clinical experience and/or licensed (i.e., LPC, LPCC, LSW, LISW) preferred.
  • Minimum two years working in a social service setting required
  • Prior experience providing direct crisis interventions and de-escalation work
  • Prior experience working with individuals experiencing crisis
  • Proficient use of desktop and laptop computers, smart phones and tablets, printers, fax machines and photocopiers as well as software including word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license, access to reliable insured transportation and ability to meet LSS insurance standards required

Responsibilities for a Crisis Prevention Specialist with Lutheran Social Services:

  • Along with Faith Mission Engagement staff, holds shelter residents accountable for upholding shelter rules and expectations. Communicates any issues or concerns to Manager or Case Manager as appropriate.
  • Monitor for unmet behavioral health needs including AOD level of care
  • Provide for de-escalation and crisis intervention as needed. Including but not limited to:
    • Participate in established process to identify clients in need of prevention interventions; develop new processes to identify clients and help refine existing process
    • Conduct wellness checks to build relationships and trust with clients; develop ongoing rapport
    • Assist clients with linkage to the most appropriate resources and services
    • Provide coping strategies to clients and debriefing with them after stressors or incidents.
    • Communicate and coordinate with case management in shelter or housing program; utilize processes in place for communication within each program and help refine as needed
    • Model appropriate crisis prevention and de-escalation skills for coworkers; provide education to peers on identifying when a client may be about to escalate or in crisis
    • Understand escalated behavior with clients in settings being served
    • Engage in crisis de-escalation to reduce situations resulting in violence, harm, and/or police and emergency medical involvement
    • Based on training, understand when to utilize 911 when situations warrant this response; provide appropriate information when police or EMS arrive
    • Assist with initial linkage to the most appropriate resources and services to respond to emergent need and communicate back to the existing case management/care team; the existing case management/care team will then be responsible for ongoing follow-up
    • Assist as appropriate during and after crisis or significant event following established agency protocol
    • Communicate and coordinate with on-site staff throughout shift as well as with Case Managers, and/or Program Managers for post-crisis client follow-up
    • Provide leadership, modeling professional and calm problem-solving behavior for clients, colleagues, and the community.
  • Participate in 100% of scheduled crisis prevention and intervention trainings as required by funder
  • Contribute to an atmosphere of safety, sanctuary, dignity, support, and resource through adherence to the Faith Mission Code of Ethics and Confidentiality Agreements.
